Individual Regularities and Cognitive Automata
نویسندگان
چکیده
This article proposes a new formal model for the analysis of texts, particularly adapted to the study of verbalizations. The model has been built to characterize individual regularities between texts written by the same author. Its purpose is to provide a precise definition of the notions of linguistic and cognitive styles. It includes two levels : at the enunciative level, lexical and syntactical regularities in the expressions of an identical intention are represented by « enunciative patterns » ; at the discursive level, the global organization of discourses is taken into account and common points between various verbalizations of a same task are captured into « cognitive patterns ». The regularities extracted are represented in a symbolic way and the structure of « Cognitive automata » is defined to sum-up all information collected from both analyses. The definitions are illustrated by examples from a real corpus. This model is a formal approach of what language tells us about the one that tells it.

متن کاملFrom Algorithmic to Subjective Randomness
We explore the phenomena of subjective randomness as a case study in understanding how people discover structure embedded in noise. We present a rational account of randomness perception based on the statistical problem of model selection: given a stimulus, inferring whether the process that generated it was random or regular. Inspired by the mathematical definition of randomness given by Kolmo...
متن کاملStatistical Learning Is Constrained to Less Abstract Patterns in Complex Sensory Input (but not the Least)
The influence of statistical information on behavior (either through learning or adaptation) is quickly becoming foundational to many domains of cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience, from language comprehension to visual development. We investigate a central problem impacting these diverse fields: when encountering input with rich statistical information, are there any constraints on...
متن کاملSo It Is, So It Shall Be: Group Regularities License Children's Prescriptive Judgments.
When do descriptive regularities (what characteristics individuals have) become prescriptive norms (what characteristics individuals should have)? We examined children's (4-13 years) and adults' use of group regularities to make prescriptive judgments, employing novel groups (Hibbles and Glerks) that engaged in morally neutral behaviors (e.g., eating different kinds of berries). Participants we...
متن کاملComplementary learning systems within the hippocampus: a neural network modelling approach to reconciling episodic memory with statistical learning.
A growing literature suggests that the hippocampus is critical for the rapid extraction of regularities from the environment. Although this fits with the known role of the hippocampus in rapid learning, it seems at odds with the idea that the hippocampus specializes in memorizing individual episodes. In particular, the Complementary Learning Systems theory argues that there is a computational t...
